CSC-Tübingen PhD Program: Project 23/2020:
Numerical simulation of the evolution of deformation structures in foliated rocks

Topic Description:Rocks are usually foliated due to sedimentary layering or the presence of cleavage(s). This makes rocks mechanically anisotropic. Following the work of Ran et al. (2019) "Time for anisotropy: The significance of mechanical anisotropy for the development of deformation structures" (Journal of Structural Geology 125, pp. 41-47., this project will systematically investigate how mechanical anisotropy affects rock deformation and the resulting structures. This will be done with the software Elle-FFT, in collaboration with co-developers in Barcelona, Spain.

Faculty: Faculty of Science
Institute/Section/Subject:Department of Geosciences, Section Mineralogy and Geodynamics, Chair for Structural Geology

Supervising Professors:Prof. Dr. Paul Dirk Bons

About the Supervisors:Bons is a structural geologist, specialising in the formation and evolution of deformation structures in rocks and ice, as well as those related to crustal fluids. Main research methods are (micro-) structural analyses of naturally deformed rocks and ice and numerical simulations.

Requirements for the application:Required Degrees: MSc in Geosciences (or potentially also related fields such, as geo-engineering, materials science). Experience with modelling preferred.
Language Requirements: English. German is not a requirement.
Notes: Any candidate should have experience with ductile rock deformation, both in the field and in thin section. Students already enrolled as a PhD in this topic may apply as well to combine their work with the numerical modelling.
