CSC-Tübingen PhD Program: Project 11/2020:
Analysis of the urban wind field for wind-energy production using a network and data base of high-resolution measurements

Topic Description:During a pilot study funded by the state government in 2012, a network of high resolution
3D wind measurements stations was installed at the Morgenstelle campus site of the university of Tübingen. Sonic anemometers attached to buildings (roofs, balconies, etc) collected (and are still collecting) already for several years the wind field above and through this urban site on top of a hill, characterized by several up to 50 m high concrete buildings. Already potential positions for wind converters are identified, but before this investment can be carried out, further data analysis is required. A tight cooperation with the graduate school Windy Cities at the university of Stuttgart (that is going to install lidar systems at our test site) is already established. The main tasks for the new PhD candidate includes maintenance of the stations and the data base, data quality control and the
numerical simulation for the urban wind field. Precise positions for wind turbines of certain size have to be determined with respect to amortization. Finally a method has to be developed, how our approach of optimizing urban wind-energy production can be exported to other sites and cities.

Faculty: Faculty of Science
Institute/Section/Subject:Centre for Applied Geo-Science, Environmental Physics

Supervising Professors:Prof. Dr. habil. Jens Bange and Dr. rer. nat. Andreas Platis (www.geo.uni-tuebingen.de/umphy)

About the Supervisors:atmospheric physics, turbulence, boundary-layer meteorology, wind energy, gases, air particles (from fine dust to pollen), sensor development, airborne measurement technology

Requirements for the application:Required Degrees: physics or meteorology or CFD / fluid-mechanical engineering
Language Requirements: English
Notes: We are looking for PhD a candidate who combines measurement technology and field work with numerical simulations. Programming skills and experience with larger data bases are essential for this study. Both funding lines A and B (full time or sandwich) are possible.
